Historical Context & BackgroundThe Iran Green Movement was started to end the ruling of the corrupt monarch. The Green Movement took place from June 12th, 2009 to early February of 2010. Iran has been ruled by an Islamic Republic, since 1980. The government had become corrupt and the citizens of Iran were tired of it. The Iranian green movement was started by a group of activists that were set on the betterment of their countries government systems. The movement got the color green as green is a strong representation of their religious roots and deep cultural customs.

Goals of the Green MovementThe Green Movement was purposed for the resignation of the corrupt president, as well as the end of the corrupt voting system such as the selection of candidates. The goal of the green movement was to recognize responsible labor unions, political, non-government, student, and women's groups. The people of Iran wanted all means of mass communication to be free of constant government tapping(i.e. tapping into citizen phone calls), and an election of judicial chief by majority vote followed by an independent judiciary.

LocationIran is located between Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, southeast of Turkey. Iran became the Islamic republic in 1979 when religious people overthrew the monarchy and took over and Ayatollah Khomeini was the supreme leader and one of the religious leaders of the movement.

Tactics, Strategies, and LeadershipThose, in support of the Green movement, held large protests and became combative with the police as a way to express that they were tired of the monarch. Other methods of expressing themselves included riots and civil disobedience. The Iran green movement was started by Mir-Hossein Mousavi, Mehdi Karroubi, Mohammad Khatami, Zahra Rahnavard.
